Nursery or School? What's Best for My Toddler?

Each year, as we approach the start of a new academic year, many families across the UAE begin considering whether to keep their children in nursery or transition them to a school setting for FS1 or FS2. This year, the UAE's new age cut-off has introduced an additional consideration for some families. Some children starting FS1 this September will be just 2 years and 8 months old, while others will already be approaching their fourth birthday. For families whose children are newly eligible, this presents an option that was not previously available.

When making this decision, it is helpful to consider your child's overall development rather than age alone. This is particularly important if your child has not yet attended an early years setting, where experienced educators have had the opportunity to observe their development over time.

The new age cut-off determines eligibility; it is not a measure of readiness. 

The new age cut-off simply determines eligibility for admission based on age. It does not mean that every child who meets the cut-off age requirement is developmentally ready to move into a larger school environment.

For example, is your child able to express their basic needs, follow simple instructions, and cope well when separated from you? These are questions you can consider, and your child’s teachers will be able to answer more specific questions about their overall development.

There are other factors you can consider when making a decision, such as whether the learning environment you are choosing offers a play-based approach that prioritises social and emotional development and whether the educators at the setting recognise and value each child’s individuality.

It is also important to consider whether your child is confidently using the toilet independently, your child’s napping needs, and your family’s requirements when it comes to the setting’s operating hours. You can read more about this here.

Learning begins long before FS1.

During the first five years of life, children's brains develop more rapidly than at any other stage. Experiences during these years lay the foundations for language, communication, emotional regulation, memory, executive functioning, physical development, and lifelong attitudes towards learning.

Common Questions Parents Ask When Deciding Between Nursery and School 

As families consider whether nursery or school is the right next step for their child, a few common questions often arise.

My child appears bored. Does this mean they need a larger school environment? 

Sometimes, children who appear bored simply need a greater challenge. A high-quality early years setting adapts experiences, extends children's interests, and introduces new opportunities for exploration. 

My child is social. Shouldn't they be in a larger environment? 

Young children benefit from social experiences within environments where educators can model communication, support friendships, and help children develop emotional regulation. This does not necessarily mean the environment needs to be larger; it means that the experiences need to be rich, intentional, and child-centred. 

My child already knows letters and numbers. Will they be held back if they are in nursery?

A setting that delivers the EYFS framework will work towards the same learning and development outcomes, whether it is a school or a nursery.
