How to motivate your children when they’re learning a new language?
When talking to parents at the nursery, they’re always amazed and excited about the new language skills their children have developed. They do share their struggles about supporting their children when it comes to teaching them a second language, especially one that they don’t speak. Here are a few recommendations on how parents can get help their children even if they don’t speak the language.
First of all, parents need to encourage children by telling them how proud you are of them that they are learning a second language. Parents can highlight the advantages of it for example by telling the child that they are pleased he/she can greet someone in a different language. For sure these types of compliments will have a positive impact towards the child studying the language!
Finding opportunities for the children to share their learnings with parents is very important too. We recommend parents to use the vocabulary list with phonics, books, songs and videos provided by the teacher through the academic year. It will be great for children to review things they’ve learned with mum and dad at home.
Another way to do it is the visit the nursery during open days! This is a great chance to spend time with your child and see him/her interacting in French or Arabic with the teacher. This will also encourage them and support them in their journey towards becoming bilingual!
